The Eichler X-100 is not just a home—it’s a defining moment in California Modernism.
Designed in 1956 by acclaimed architects A. Quincy Jones and Frederick Emmons for visionary builder Joseph Eichler, the X-100 was conceived as a bold experiment in the future of American housing. Built as a steel-frame prototype, it reimagined how homes could be constructed, lived in, and experienced—eliminating interior load-bearing walls to create an open, light-filled environment decades ahead of its time.
Organized around private garden atriums and flooded with natural light from dramatic skylines above, the home embodies Eichler’s philosophy of seamless indoor-outdoor living. Every detail—from its exposed steel structure to its innovative materials—reflects a rare intersection of architectural ambition, technological optimism, and livable design.
Today, the Eichler X-100 stands as one of the most significant and collectible mid-century modern residences ever built—a true icon of design history, and a once-in-a-generation opportunity to own a piece of architectural legacy.

Joseph Eichler’s Personal Residence | 19 Irving Avenue, Atherton
Built in 1951 as his own private sanctuary, Joseph Eichler’s residence at 19 Irving Avenue is more than a home—it is the origin story of an architectural movement. Designed by Anshen & Allen, this was Eichler’s first custom-built project and the prototype for one of California’s most iconic design legacies.
Set on a serene, oak-studded lot in Atherton’s coveted Lindenwood neighborhood, the home embodies the principles that would define Eichler living: seamless indoor-outdoor flow, expansive glass walls, bold geometry, and a profound connection to nature. Its distinctive V-shaped layout and forward-thinking design elements served as a living laboratory—where Eichler refined the ideas that would later shape thousands of mid-century modern homes across Silicon Valley and beyond.
Owned and lived in by Eichler himself for over a decade, this residence remains a rare and deeply personal expression of his vision—an architectural landmark bridging custom design and the democratization of modernism.
Represented by Eric & Janelle Boyenga of Compass, nationally recognized Eichler specialists and trusted stewards of Silicon Valley’s most significant mid-century modern homes.

The Architects Behind your Favorite Eichler Homes…
Standing: Robert ‘Bob’ Anshen, Sitting: William Stephan Allen
Anshen & Allen were pioneering Mid-Century Modern architects best known for their collaboration with Joseph Eichler from 1949–1960. As Eichler’s original architectural partners, they introduced iconic design elements such as open floor plans, flat roofs, exposed beams, and walls of glass that blurred the line between indoor and outdoor living. Their innovative work helped define the Eichler style and transform post-war suburban architecture in California, making modern design both affordable and accessible to families.
L: A. Quincy Jones, M: Joseph Eichler, R: Frederick Emmons
A. Quincy Jones and Frederick Emmons formed the celebrated firm Jones & Emmons, one of Joseph Eichler’s most influential architectural partners during the 1950s and 60s. Known for their dramatic gable roofs, clerestory windows, and open-beam construction, they helped scale Eichler’s modern vision into entire California neighborhoods, including developments in Palo Alto, San Mateo, and Marin. Their work is praised for elegant geometry, indoor–outdoor harmony, and timeless design that continues to define California Modern architecture today.
Left: Claude Oakland, Right: Joseph Eichler
Claude Oakland was one of the most prolific architects of the Eichler Homes era, designing more than 3,000 modern residences between 1959–1974. After working with Anshen & Allen, Oakland became Eichler’s lead architect, evolving the Eichler look with refined lines, expanded atrium models, warm material palettes, and livable floor plans. His work is admired for its clean simplicity, structural clarity, and strong connection to nature, making Oakland-designed Eichlers some of the most coveted Mid-Century Modern homes in the Bay Area.
