Anshen + Allen

Founded in 1940 in San Francisco by Samuel Robert "Bob" Anshen and William Stephen "Steve" Allen Jr., Anshen and Allen initially established themselves with a range of architectural projects. However, a significant aspect of their legacy was shaped through their collaboration with Joseph Eichler, a residential real estate developer, starting in the 1950s. This partnership was pivotal in defining the California Modernist style in residential architecture.

Anshen, born in 1910 in Revere, Massachusetts, and Allen, born in 1912 in Neptune Township, New Jersey, met while studying at the University of Pennsylvania School of Architecture. After graduating, they moved to San Francisco in 1937, where they eventually embarked on their first major project, the Davies House, a Tudor Gothic mansion completed in 1941.

Their work with Joseph Eichler began in the post-World War II era, marking a significant shift in their design approach. Eichler's vision of affordable, stylish homes for the postwar middle class resonated with the architects' modernist leanings. Anshen and Allen designed the initial Eichler homes, characterized by open floor plans, large glass walls, and integration with the surrounding landscape, pioneering the California Modernist style in residential architecture. Bob Anshen specifically added the atrium to the Eichler building plans, which is a classic Eichler feature.

This collaboration not only shaped suburban landscapes in California but also established Anshen and Allen as forefront architects in modernist residential design. The firm's engagement in tract housing design under Eichler's commission continued until 1962, leaving a lasting impact on American suburban architecture.
